Genuine Japanese Homeware & Hasami Porcelain
hasami tradition

Tradition

Hasami, Nagasaki is one of the foremost pottery districts in Japan. Porcelain was first made in the area almost 400 years ago, during the Edo Period. It was not only distributed all over Japan but also exported to Europe through the port of Nagasaki. The establishment of a mass production system at an early stage ensured reliability in quality and price, and its rich tradition was kept alive.

The Uniqueness of Individuality

Every piece of HASAMI PORCELAIN is one-of-a-kind. While the shapes themselves are uniform, the colouration, flecks and texture unavoidably express the distinct makeup of their clay. The proprietary mixture of crushed stone from Amakusa used in this clay and porcelain mixture have created some of the most beautiful pottery in the world. Due to the organic nature of the porcelain ware used for Hasami, unavoidable variations, colour unevenness, and what Hasami craftspeople call “staining” appear in all HASAMI PORCELAIN products. Variations are the result of uncontrollable chemical reactions between the glaze and the raw materials during the extreme firing process. The difference in colour and texture is not considered second quality, nor is it considered defective. It is a prized sign of beauty of the line’s one-of-a-kind character and nature. The textural variations you see in HASAMI PORCELAIN are evidence of the human hands involved in the process and the many environmental variations that occur at each step.

Simplicity & Usability

A neat and clean straight line that is also the root of Japanese traditional form. A meaningful curve derived from the necessity of function and manufacturing process. The design of HASAMI PORCELAIN, which is composed of only simple lines, creates a more beautiful harmony by the overlapping of several vessels and the repeating form.

Range & Colour

The individual modular pieces that make up the HASAMI PORCELAIN range include teapots, coffee pots, mugs, bowls, plates, lids, tumblers, bottles and planters. All the pieces are made to fit. The individual items are designed with a common diameter, so they can be stacked freely. Many pieces have multiple functions, such as plates that are trays and become lids too. All pieces come in Natural, Charcoal and Clear glaze. Also available, timber lids, plates and trays in Ash.
